Khatam. Tata. Bye-Bye. Gaya.

No matter how much we use that  clip of Rahul Gandhi saying "Khatam. Tata...." in memes and/or funny videos, it is best used on 31st December of each year. It is even more usable for the years following 2020. I should say 'year', considering that its only a year since 2020, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it'll remain relevant in coming years.  Well, what is there to talk about today? It's the last day of the year. Nostalgia abounds. Happy memories, bittersweet ones, sad ones, downright depressing ones- we've all kinds. Many of the people we know will be going out with friends and having a gala time. Some, the smarter ones, will have celebrated the event earlier and will be just staying home.  I've celebrated enough this year, I think. What I probably haven't done enough is be thankful for the smallest things. The most insignificant things, like a simple 'Hi', seem like a huge loss when they're not there.  There are ...

Short and Sweet

Short and sweet sums up the average Bengali pretty well. There are not too many giants here in Calcutta, and given the amount of sweets we consume, it would be a medical anomaly if we were not sweet. Jokes aside, the average Bengali isn't too tall, but definitely intelligent. Another thing which may be useful while detecting a Bengali in a crowd: check for spectacles. If not as a child, then most of us definitely get our spectacles as young teenagers. But enough of generalizations; I'm back home, and it feels great. Literally. I'm lounging around in a T-shirt and have no worries about getting chilblains or catching a cold. The weather is just amazing when compared to the freezing cold of the hills. The journey was fun and thankfully, uneventful. The only downside, so to speak, was the amount of time we had to wait at the airport. Given the fact that there was nothing to do, the one thing I managed to do during that time was daydream.  And let me tell you, it's fun. You...

Till We Meet Again

I doubt the title of this post actually has anything to do with the actual post itself. It's the name of a song by Johnny Reid. I had forgotten all about it until a few weeks ago, when I stumbled upon it on Youtube. Since then, I've just kept it in mind. Given what's been going on, that shouldn't be a surprise. Anyways, my exams ended today. So that's a good thing for me. I overestimated my writing capabilities, though. What am I going to do with 6 blank A4 sheets with perfectly spaced double margins now? And by 'perfectly spaced', I mean that they are spaced just enough so that they seem like they don't take up a lot of room, while they take up a fair amount. I know, I know. It's tremendously lazy or a humongous short-cut. I prefer to think of it as a fine art. Not everyone gets it, but once they do, they love it. I'm probably interpreting it wrong, but hey, whatever works.  Either way, that's 6 blank A4 sheets I'll have to take care of...

The Week That Wasn't (If only that were true)

This is my first attempt at blogging. I've tried writing stories, but somehow, I haven't been able to get a move on. Why today, all of a sudden? Well, the title ought to give you some idea. The past week was NOT a good one, but it's done, for now. That's the only good thing about it, I suppose. My exams are about to get over, but that's not on my mind at all. You see, something happened today that made me write.  A tree was cut down today. And yes, there are millions of trees being cut down all over the world, but why don't they matter, blah-blah-blah. Please dispense with that environmental crap. Caring about the environment isn't crap, not in any world, but bringing it into every single conversation is stupid. It's like trying to stuff a bull into every little rabbit hole you see. It's possible, but neither the bull nor the burrow like it or benefit from it. So yeah, a tree was cut down today. I should mention, I live in a hill station. There'...
